Hawaiian Economics: Barter Fish for Poi

This lesson explores the topic of online banking. It explains what online banking is and it reviews the pros and cons of online banking versus traditional banking.

The World of Haiku

In this lesson, students explore the traditions and conventions of haiku, comparing this classic form of Japanese poetry to a related genre of Japanese visual art and composing haiku of their own. This lesson also includes links so kids can learn about Japan and Japanese culture, and a link for a Japanese newspaper that has an English version, and that publishes haiku in English. Your students may want to submit their original haiku.

Though this lesson is labeled K-2, it is also applicable to K-12 for its links to pioneer settlers in early American history. This lesson features an introduction to pioneers and their housing for elementary students, as well as  primary document research, images and textual analysis for older students.

Learning the Blues

Students take a virtual field trip to Memphis, Tennessee, one of the prominent centers of blues activities, and explore the history of the blues in the work of W. C. Handy and a variety of country blues singers whose music preserves the folk origins of this unique American art form. Scripting the Past: Exploring Women's History Through Film

Students will learn the purposes Egyptian pyramids serve, both historically, and in the present. They will learn about size and scale of pyramids and the vocabulary of artifacts. They will learn about the ancient Egyptian culture through what the pyramids tell us about the peoples of ancient Egypt.
